The capture of Saddam Hussein is the “perfect Christmas present”, British troops serving in Iraq said today.

RAF soldier Dave Coombs said the news of the former Iraqi dictator’s detention has brought a sense of “immense relief” to the British contingent in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

Coombs, 43, from Portsmouth, who has been based in Basra for a month and also served in Iraq during the war, is one of about 11,000 British servicemen and women still serving in Iraq.
