Frederick workers to collect Christmas trees: "Frederick workers to collect Christmas trees

Jan. 1, 2004
City of Frederick workers will collect residents' Christmas trees Monday and Tuesday, a City Hall spokeswoman said.

City personnel will collect trees from the city's north side on Monday and the south side on Tuesday. The north-south dividing line is (from west to east) Yellow Springs Road, Rosemont Drive, 2nd Street, Church Street extended and Gas House Pike.

The city recycles the trees that are collected. Trees are ground up and utilized as mulch on city properties as a way to reduce material costs and to keep these biodegradable items out of the Frederick County landfill. This year the city expects to collect between 6,000 and 8,000 trees, Public Information Officer Nancy Gregg Poss said.

Poss asked residents to ensure that trees are placed on curbs and are free of ornaments, garland, tinsel, lights, or tree stands. Plastic bags should also be removed, Poss said. "

News-Sun Highlands County's Hometown Newspaper Since 1927: "Christmas tree recycling called off for 2004
By BARRY FOSTER
News-Sun
SEBRING -- For the first time in more than a decade there will not be a county-sponsored Christmas tree recycling program this year.
'It really boils down to two factors, economics and lack of participation,' Highlands County Recycling Coordinator Christy Reed said.
Since the post-holiday program began in 1990, residents had turned in literally thousands of trees that were ground into mulch. However, since a high water mark in 1997, the participation had slowed with fewer and fewer trees coming in each year.
It seemed that 2002 was the last draw"

Daily Citizen: "'Chip' in a Christmas tree Saturday

From staff reportsDecember 31, 2003

You took off all the ornaments, wrapped them up and put them away for next year.
You took off all the lights and carefully coiled them before putting them in a box, where they will somehow tie themselves into a mammoth knot by November.
Now, what do you do with the tree?
Bring it to Home Depot off Shugart Road, where you can have it turned into mulch and get a free seedling and a Chick-fil-A coupon for your trouble.
Keep Dalton/Whitfield Beautiful is holding its annual 'Bring One for the Chipper' event, encouraging area residents to keep Christmas trees out of landfills by recycling them into mulch, which is then offered free to Whitfield County residents.
The county public works department will be providing a chipper.
The mulch will also be used for public beautification projects"
