New Website Promotes Hybrid Holiday: CHRISMUKKAH - a Mix of Christmas and Hanukkah Rituals for Mixed-Faith Families
Monday October 25, 12:20 pm ET

LIVINGSTON, Mont., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Last December, California newlyweds Michelle and Ron Gompertz were slumped on the sofa as their newborn daughter nursed. They stared at the TV, only half-watching the Christmas episode of "The O.C." - a hip teen series, which centers on an affluent family from Newport Beach, California. The O.C.'s smart-aleck anti-hero Seth, son of Sandy Cohen (Jewish) and Kirsten (Protestant), was explaining the family holiday policy to new foster brother Ryan:
Seth: So what's it going to be? You want your menorah or a
candy cane, hmm? Christmas or Hanukkah?
Ryan: Um, I'm not-
Seth: Ah. Don't worry about it buddy, because in this house,
you don't have to choose. Allow me to introduce to you
a little something I like to call - Chrismukkah.
Ryan: Chrismukkah?
Seth: That's right. It's the new holiday and it's sweeping
the nation.

"Sound familiar?" Ron asked rhetorically. Michelle is the Midwestern daughter of a Protestant minister, while Ron is Jewish from New York City. Seth Cohen's clever Chrismukkah was a good name to describe their upcoming hybrid holiday, too.

Ron jumped on his laptop and Googled "Chrismukkah." Finding no results, they hand-made "Happy Chrismukkah" cards for friends and relatives, and decided to create http://www.Chrismukkah.com, a specialized interfaith holiday website.

Ron and Michelle are among the 2.5 million Jewish/Christian families in America today. According to the United Jewish Communities' National Jewish Population Survey, in 2000 52% of America's 5.5 million Jews are intermarried, a decline from their prior survey. This is a worrisome trend within the Jewish community, where assimilation is a hot topic. Many are aghast at the very idea of a Chrismukkah-type holiday for its suggestion of syncretism - the melding of religions - an ominous development for Jewish identity.

According to the UJC survey, many Jews believe it is "racist" to promote marriage only within their faith. The rise of religious fundamentalism has many Jews "turned off" to the role religion plays in the modern world. Perhaps this is why Chrismukkah resonated with Ron and Michelle.

Chrismukkah.com features a collection of refreshingly clever and original holiday cards. For example, one card features a bowl of chicken soup with matzoh balls stacked 3 high to resemble a snow man. Another wishes "Merry Mazeltov." Another depicts a kosher fruitcake complete with recipe. Cards sell for $15.00 per dozen. The site also contains information and resources of interest to interfaith families.

Ron and Michelle recently moved from San Francisco to rural Montana for the quality of life there. They've dedicated the new venture to their half- Jewish daughter Minna, seeing expansion potential for their barn-based business. The O.C.'s Seth Cohen might slyly suggest adding a line of "Rabbi Rabbit"-themed "EasterOver" cards for the Spring.
